A continent going red: USA har mistet Latinamerika

It is one of the most important and yet largely untold stories of our world in 2006. George W Bush has lost Latin America.

While the Bush administration has been fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, relations between the United States and the countries of Latin America have become a festering sore - the worst for years.

Virtually anyone paying attention to events in Venezuela and Nicaragua in the north to Peru and Bolivia further south, plus in different ways Mexico, Argentina and Brazil, comes to the same conclusion: there is a wave of profound anti-American feeling stretching from the Texas border to the Antarctic.

And almost everyone believes it will get worse.

Og det er jo sandt: Det er ikke længere blot Chavez i Venezuela. Mexico var (ligesom Canada) imod overfaldet på Irak. Siden har vi fået Lula i Brasilien, Kirchner i Argentina, Evo Morales i Bolivia, og senest en kvindelig socialist i Chile; i Peru og Nicaragua står henholdvsis venstrepopulisten og globaliseringsmodstanderen Ollanta Humala og ingen ringere end (selveste arvefjenden) Daniel Ortega på spring.

Og alle steder lader det til, at venstredrejningen ikke implicerer en overgang til planøkonomi og statsstyring - men tværtimod til mere åbenhed og større politisk frihed.

Denne udvikling vil hverken føre revolutioner med sig eller afskaffe ulighed og korruption - men den vil repræsentere et skridt mod større frihed og velstand i de traditionelt meget autoritære latinamerikanske lande. Det gælder også rent kulturelt:
